Music Therapy
Four years ago, the Genesis Fund offered The Autism Center of the South Shore, Inc. a grant to develop and run our first pilot Music Therapy Program. Since its inception, this has been an extremely successful and popular program. As with any new endeavor, ACSS has continued to develop and fine tune this program to best serve the ASD community. With the start of the programs third year, sessions are now carefully organized according to age and ability, for an optimal group dynamic; group sizes are capped at six students to maximize the therapeutic experience. Our Therapists are carefully screened and selected, offering students of all abilities the opportunity to participate with the support of sign language, picture exchange icons, instruments, and their voices. ACSS is proud to have offered dozens of children a highly therapeutic, low priced program that offers so many benefits. Music can enhance mood, attention, and behavior. It helps optimize the ability to learn and interact. Research shows parallels between singing and speech, rhythm and motor skills, and memory for song with memory for academics. Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder are often better able to process music and are more willing to initiate singing versus speaking. Music increases motivation and emotional engagement. It also helps to develop cognitive/academic abilities, social and communication skills, and motor abilities. It can be beneficial with behavior issues and sensory integration dysfunction, as well.

Sensational Social Skills Program
In August of 2003, in response to an overwhelming plea from the families we serve, the Autism Center of the South Shore developed and launched its “Sensational Social Skills” program for individuals affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This unique, popular program is the only one of its kind on the South Shore.

Our pilot programs have offered nearly two dozen students an intensive, sixteen week social skills curriculum. Capped at six students per class, groups are carefully created and run by our two distinguished therapists. As part of our wish to offer high quality, affordable services, the Autism Center of the South Shore proudly supplements a significant part of the tuition of this intensive program. Through word of mouth, Sensational Social Skills is evolving into a highly sought after program serving a critical, previously unmet need. We are excited to nurture and cultivate this program as it begins its’ second year.

Often, the most distinguishing characteristic of an individual with ASD is his/her marked impairment in social interaction, with obvious difficulty initiating, maintaining, reciprocating, and terminating interactions. Most parents will cite this social impairment as the most significant concern they have. When a child lacks necessary social skills, it affects his/her ability to enjoy the meaningful things in life, such as sharing an interest, eating lunch, playing at recess, and the overall ability to form a friendship. Individuals with ASD are often unable to figure out how to effectively and appropriately interact with peers. Basic social skills that come naturally to typically developing children must be precisely taught to individuals with ASD through training and strategies. Social skills therapists help students to recognize thoughts and feelings by studying facial expressions and language cues. Students learn reciprocal interactions by practicing listening and asking questions. Also, typical social encounters are often acted out in role playing activities. Students develop self-confidence and feel less anxious socially once they develop a solid skill base upon which to build.

Social skills training is an ongoing process that encompasses home, school and the community. We are honored to offer this important program. For more information, please call or email the office.
